Easy Apple Crisp has apple pie filling with caramel sauce, and a crispy, cinnamon oat and brown sugar topping.

An apple dessert that can be made all year! This Easy Apple Crisp has caramel sauce mixed with the apple pie filling for a Fall twist, but you can also add cranberries or whole cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or strawberries for summer.

What ingredients do I need to make this?

Ingredients for Easy Apple Crisp laid out on a table.
  • All-purpose flour – Spooned and leveled.
  • Unsalted butter – Soften it for easier mixing.
  • Brown sugar, packed
  • Old-Fashioned Oats
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Apple Pie Filling
  • Caramel Sauce – Optional, but it adds a rich sweetness.

How do I make this recipe?

One of the things I love about this recipe is how quick and easy it is to make!

Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a medium or large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, butter, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon using your hands or a wooden spoon. I prefer using my hands so I can make sure the butter is evenly mixed.

Pour the apple pie filling and caramel sauce into a 10 or 12-inch iron skillet. You can also use a 9×13 baking dish or pan. Sprinkle the brown sugar and oat mixture on top evenly.

Bake the crisp for about 35 minutes or until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the crisp topping has browned.

Let the crisp rest for 20 minutes before serving with ice cream and extra caramel sauce.

What equipment and supplies do I need for this Easy Apple Crisp?

You need the following:

  • A medium or large mixing bowl.
  • 10 or 12-inch iron skillet. Or you can use a 9×13 baking dish or pan.

Can I make my own apple pie filling?

Absolutely! I recommend peeling and slicing both green apples and red apples for a balanced flavor. Toss the apples in brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch before layering them in the bottom of the skillet.

This may take a bit longer to bake than if you used canned apple pie filling.

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can! I think the apple crisp texture and flavors are best when it’s freshly made, but you can bake it, let it cool to room temperature, then store it in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Then, you’ll just reheat it in the oven for 35-45 minutes.

Can this Apple Crisp be frozen?

It can be frozen, yes! You can freeze it before or after baking. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and foil, and store it in the fridge for up to 2 months. Make sure to thaw it out overnight in the fridge before reheating it in the oven.

Do I have to use oats in the topping?

Not at all! You can add some pecans, walnuts, or just omit them altogether for more of a streusel or crumble topping.

The topping is coming out too soggy. How did that happen?

It may need longer to bake. If you are using fresh apples instead of apple pie filling, the moisture may be making the topping too wet. Make sure to toss the apples in at least 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to soak up extra juice.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar tightly packed
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 (21-ounce) cans apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a medium or large mixing bowl, mix the flour, butter, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon using your hands or a wooden spoon.
  • Pour the apple pie filling and caramel sauce into a 10 or 12-inch iron skillet. Sprinkle the brown sugar and oat mixture on top evenly.

Notes

  • Salted butter can be used instead of unsalted butter.
  • If you don’t have an iron skillet, this can be baked in a 9×13 baking dish or pan.
  • I like to use my hands to mix the crisp topping so the butter will be thoroughly mixed in.
